FALL 2018 ORC DINING ROOM – week 1

FALL 2018 ORC DINING ROOM – week 1

It’s impossible to stay on top of all the featured designers and guest participants, but click on the image below to go to the ONE ROOM CHALLENGE headquarters where all participants link in once a week for the next six weeks. Pick some favorites and follow along.  There is a lot of talent and drama out there.

TREPIDATION

With some trepidation, here I am six months later, still trying to renovate the dining room.  For those of you who don’t remember, I attempted to address the dining room last Spring with the SPRING 2018 ORC and ended up putting this project on hold.  A trip to San Francisco, the twins’ birthdays, illness, and a major hitch lead us down a dark path of incompletion. The major hitch being that we decided to redo the ceiling rather than paint over the nasty asbestos tiles.  I was trying to do a quick fix and my husband Shiloh got me to slow down and take the time to do it right.  I really had no idea what we were getting into.

RECAP

Here is a quick recap of our storied dining room. When we moved into the house the dining room was a deep orange and has remained that way for over a decade. You know why? Twins.  Charlotte and Arthur came along and needless to say, the dining room had to stay that way for awhile.

When we first moved in, we found the brass light fixture at THE REBUILDING CENTER in Portland. it was supposed to be a $40 temporary fix.  I have banged my head on that solid brass fixtures more times than I can count.  I relished carrying it to the curb this Summer where it was promptly claimed by some poor innocent passerby who has no idea how hard that thing is when you walk into it.

The curtains will also be replaced.

The chairs will be reupholstered.

MOUNTAIN WHITE

To get rid of the orange, I did a few base coats in MOUNTAIN WHITE by METRO PAINT which is my go to white. I’ve used it all over the house – in my office, in the upstairs hallway.  Its recycled, quality paint that is extremely affordable ($40 dollars or so for a 5 gallon tub) and it is a beautiful white for bluish Portland light.

See the ugly ceiling?  It looked even worse after the white went up. That’s when we decided we couldn’t bare to look at it every evening over dinner.  It would bother us.  We’d ask, why didn’t we replace it when we had the chance???

THE DEMO

This is the ceiling without the wooden trim covering the seams.

Then he cut into the ceiling to replace old wires and add new ones for the wifi and smoke detector.

Then he bought dry wall to install over the tiles since we were only going to lose 1/2 inch if we took them down and that would have been a nightmare.

He had to build these wooden braces to hold up the dry wall during installation.

And there’s this lovely grate that my father in law and a few others have fallen through when a chair leg finds its way into the holes.

So, 6 months later, clean slate.White walls, white ceiling.  Let the fun begin.

INSPIRATION

The room that remains an inspiration is this room by San Francisco ABH Interiors:

I love the soft gray walls with the darker wooden tones and of course this incredible mural by GRACIE STUDIO. We plan to do an accent wall but with a more northwestern vibe.  I like the lightness of the room with the warm sepia, aqua and white tones.

Swallows are a thing in Portland.   And this John Derian Chimney Swallows Dawn Wallpaper available through Designers Guild is pretty wonderful:

So is this serene cloud wall by A NEWALL:

SO, the walls are where I am headed next.

Thanks for following along! I’d love to hear from you as we go along here…

ORC WEEK 3 – DINING ROOM MAKEOVER

ORC WEEK 3 – DINING ROOM MAKEOVER

I am going to keep this brief because frankly I am behind on this project and it all needs to come together in a few weeks.  This is my current mood board although a lot hinges on my ability to get this wallpaper which normally requires a 6 week lead time.  Waiting to hear back from Schumacher about this ZEBRA PALM in black on Sisal…

PLAN A:

It would be such a statement to have the ZEBRA PALM on one wall of my dining room where this dresser is…

PLAN B:

A decorative painted wall on one side of my DINING ROOM. The challenge will be to have it done in a tasteful way that I won’t get tired of.
I found this stencil on ETSY that I could possibly use:
Or this one:
In this color palette perhaps….
My inspiration for a wall mural and color palette comes from this lovely room by ABH INTERIORS using wallpaper from GRACIE STUDIO.

I just bought a 5 gallon tub of MOUNTAIN SNOW from METRO PAINT which is my favorite go to for a lovely white base coat at $65 for a 5 gallon tub!  That should cover the orange walls.
So that’s where I’m at folks.   What do you think???  Any comments, thoughts??? Please feel free to share.
Thanks for reading as always and have a great week!

ORC SPRING 2018 WK TWO – DINING ROOM

ORC SPRING 2018 WK TWO – DINING ROOM

Here we are at WEEK TWO of the ONE ROOM CHALLENGE.

MY DINING ROOM…

If you are not already familiar with the ONE ROOM CHALLENGE, it is a bi-annual event created by Linda from CALLING IT HOME that has been going on for thirteen years now.  There are some seriously talented DESIGNERS that are asked to participate:

Over a hundred GUEST PARTICIPANTS like myself that must be design bloggers also volunteer to participate:

So how about that ORANGE dining room?

I’VE BEEN LOOKING FOR SOME INSPIRATION…

IKSEL DECORATIVE ARTS & de GOURNAY murals are just beyond. A girl can dream, right?  This reminds me so much of my great grandparents dining room in a southern mansion that was once in our family 🙁

I love the nod to the south, where I was born, in North Carolina. And I want the room to have character. I have always loved palm trees in restaurants and hotels.

These are all so wonderful although over the top for our house.

Look at that mirrored ceiling!

I saw this at the de Gourney showroom last time I was in San Francisco and it was stunning:

I love this color scheme below but don’t want to go too gray/blue in Portland where half of the year we really crave light.  It’s a more subtle palette with pops of green and color:

Love these colors, which I can bring in as accent colors here and there in the room:

And an even softer palette, which is actually where I think I am headed:

This is one set of dishes that I use a fair amount:

And I found this fabric awhile ago and bought it thinking I might use it at some point in the house:

This is a rocking chair that floats between the living room and dining room. The jungle theme is brewing.

I am playing around with whether or not I like it in the dining room.

Stumbled across this wallpaper by Schumacher – Zebra Palm – that has me thinking.

I could do it on one wall behind this dresser/bar area:

I sent away for samples so we will see which ones looks best in the room. These are on grasscloth:

This is also a more economic option I am considering for a similar effect that is a tall stencil from OLIVE LEAF STENCILS

I’m just not sure I can pull it off and I might get tired of it.

The present curtain situation:

I would love these woven shades from Pottery Barn on the bay windows:

This is a crisp look too:

But curtains might be nice with the woven shades in a neutral that works with lots of different accents and stays light:

This is a gorgeous space and I love the soft silver blue with the more neutral walls:

I’m also dreaming about this bell jar pendant from THE ENCHANTED HOME with etched palms to replace the brass chandelier we have.

That will be a happy day when that comes down.

Pretty wallpaper by Mad Cap Cottage:

And this soft palette is lovely too – light gray, green, cream, a touch of coral…

A sisal rug or something durable that can with stand kids, a dog, meals, etc.  This one is from Pottery Barn:

So its time to start making some decisions and get moving on this thing.

I am completely open to your ideas/thoughts. If you have any, please share them with me!

Thanks for following along and I will be back next week to share more.
