Well, I am SO happy to share with you some pictures from the ORC FINAL REVEAL of my upstairs GUEST ROOM!
I have to tell you that I really struggled with this room. I thought I had it all together and a couple days before the reveal I was NOT HAPPY with the results. I did a few things that turned the room around. The bedding felt lifeless, the room too traditional, and I was uninspired by the art. It was not cozy enough.
I added WHITE: white baskets, white duvet cover, shams and pillow covers from IKEA, fresh white paint on the trim, white lilies in a white vase. In an old house, in low light Portland, I have learned that nothing makes a room look fresh and modern better than WHITE.
I called my neighbor, Virginie Hoover, who had some lovely SHIBORI textiles she made this Summer that gave me the more bohemian/beach vibe I was looking for.
I went to GOODWILL for more frames and art, and printed some posters at WALGREEN’s from my Iphone pictures that were done in one hour. Fortunately, the local framers,I’VE BEEN FRAMED, were totally resourceful and accommodating and built some framing kits for me to assemble the art really fast.
My kids were the best, and helped me paint the dresser. I was up until 4 am the night before the final reveal day painting trim and doors. I was so exhausted and the extremely gray rainy day made it really hard to get any decent pictures. SO finally today the SUN came out here and there and I ran upstairs to try to capture the room. The night time shots I tried to take last night with artificial lights were horrible.
Something serendipitous always happens during a One Room Challenge when I go to Goodwill. This time I found a beautiful blue glass vase for $6.99 that had the original $59.99 price tag on it.
I also picked up a large framed poster really just for the frame but when I hung it up, oddly enough, the watermelon print grew on me and really kind of pulled things together.

THE ONE ROOM CHALLENGE was extended one week (for the first time ever due to all the natural disasters of late). This is WEEK 6 and the FINAL REVEAL will be WEEK 7.
EXCUSES
I apologize for a gap in reporting on my project.
Between the monthly flea market where I am a vendor.
and HALLOWEEN, it has been a whirlwind of muddy pumpkins, costumes and candy.
The visits to the pumpkin patch (twice):
The HOMEMADE Luke Skywalker and Princess Leia Costumes:
So, back to the room…
IKEA TRIP
No ORC is ever complete without a trip to IKEA and a night of Swedish Meatballs.
Besides walking throughout the entire store for inspiration, I needed to consider the baskets and the sheets:
Do you think we stayed too long?
GALLERY WALL
The gallery wall is coming together although I am wanting to replace the large beach image on the upper left. I don’t know that I can pull it off in time. I tried to incorporate Jimmy Smits from How to Get Away With Murder into the gallery wall last night. Love the pop of red and the dark contrast not to mention, el hombre guapo! See how that dresser is still very UNPAINTED.
I love the indigo blues and rich reds in this quick shot I took of a tanker in Astoria last weekend, but I want the picture to be more interesting.
After some perusing on MINTED, I found these:
San Francisco is only one of my favorite cities in the world. Which would you choose?
A)Overlooking the Golden Gate, where my husband proposed:
OR
B) Baker Beach, where we had our wedding pictures taken. They are both pretty wonderful. Which one do you like?
NEEDLE ARTS
Here’s a little embroidery project in the works that justifies occasional Netflix binging – it’s for the room also because you know, its all in the details.
I am incorporating some colors into the indigo mix to liven things up. This will be one more layer of interest along with some lovely Pendleton pillows.
CURTAINS
The rings have to be hand sewn onto the curtains as they are extremely heavy and the drapery hooks simply won’t do.
SCONCES
I am happy with the sconces for the price although I need some rods to hide the wires it would appear.
CRUNCH MODE
I can’t tell you everything…I have to leave some things a surprise.
What color will I paint the DRESSER? I am about to pull the trigger or in this case, load the paint brush.
And I have some painting to do this weekend on the doors and trim. We are down to the wire here. I was hoping for a glorious sunlit afternoon next week with the natural light just right to capture the room.
So, hang in there and next week I will show you what I’ve got!

I’ve been moving right along with design decisions this past week…I’ve got the rug and sconces ordered and custom bedding and curtains designed and in the works.
I just want to say that in the midst of all this craziness, we had to go to the beach last weekend. And as much as I didn’t want to go, it was such a gift. Sometimes when you think you least need a break, is exactly when you need it the most. As a stay at home entrepeneur/Mom, this is really important to remember as I often resist stepping away from my work/life.
In addition to the herd of elk we saw on the way to the beach, there were only a handful of people there.
Gearhart Ocean State Park is one of my favorite beaches in the world. These images capture the feeling I am after in this room. An escape – with calming shades of blue, natural tones and soft textures.
We stay in Astoria a lot when when we go to the beach as the kids’ grandparents live there. It is a 15 minute drive from Gearhart. These shots below are classic Astoria as they always have the big international freighters waiting for clearance to go up the Columbia River. I’ve come to appreciate the patina of rust over the years.
Wondering if a couple of these beach images might come into play in the stairwell somehow leading up to the bedroom.
LIGHTING
As much as I had my eye on some outstanding artisan shades, Im thinking I will go in this direction, as they are more budget friendly and they tie into the linen curtains without competing with the sconces.
My final choice on the sconces:
TEXTILES
This is my palette for bedding and curtains:
And I am really excited to add some Pendleton in indigo hues to this mix. I love the texture of the fringe. Wait until you see the long lumbar “statement pillow” I designed, using scraps from “Pendleton by the pound” at our friendly Pendleton Woolen Mill End Store.
And I pulled the trigger on this runner from LOWE’s which will feel so good to step into in the morning.
This is where I am stuck. The DRESSER. I can’t decide which color to paint it:
1. BLUE
2. RED
or
BLACK
Please tell me – what would you do?
ART
I’ve got my art all picked out as well for the salon style mini gallery I will have behind the TV. I have a nice watercolor of the beach and I’m having a pair of Abstract Venice Canal photographs framed. I stole this large beach print from the hallway as it works so well with my theme and I had a great replacement for it anyway.
Seriously, help me out on the dresser. Of course, my husband says refinish the dresser, but I really want to paint it.

This week I’ve been trying to settle on the textiles, rug and lighting so I can got those ordered and in the works. I put together this mood board:
LIGHTING
I have this antique chandelier:
and I am trying to modernize it/freshen it up so I have found a few options…
This is fun, from SASSY SHADES on ETSY:
and I am in love with these, from SHANDELL’S:
I am also looking at SCONCES for above the bed which are really needed for night time reading. Here are a few I’m considering. These are all from LAMPS PLUS except for the one that is second from last, which is from TARGET.
I am leaning toward the third pair down as I like the brass and gold combination and it will offer a little contrast.
The look is pretty good for the price of $99/pair. The last one I would take in a heartbeat but it is a little over budget.
TEXTILES
This was one of my inspiration shots (room by Ana Rosa):
I put together these fabrics that I found at THE MILL END STORE in SE PDX. I like the Japanese toile that has a vintage quality to it and I am adding stripes and ikat.
I am going to use these fabrics for my duvet cover and euro shams:
OLYMPUS DIGITAL CAMERA
I have some triple pleated BELGIAN LINEN SHADES from WS HOME for this room. I am going to add a decorative inner edge to liven up the curtains and tie in with the blues in the room.
This is what I will add – a few pleats on each inner side.
It is really nice to step into a soft, plush rug in the morning so I am thinking maybe something like this SAFAVIEH CALIFORNIA SHAG runner from LOWE’s for $83.
PAINT COLORS
I am planning to paint the trim a fresh white.
I was originally planning to paint the dresser indigo blue but I am also playing around with caliente red also.
Only because I can’t get this entry by @maxwhumphrey out of my mind.
And LIGHT GRAY PAINT for the two DOORS
That’s where I am for now. I would love to hear your comments. I have some fun art ideas in the works to share with you next time. Thanks for stopping by.
