And be sure to check out the FEATURED DESIGNERS via CALLING IT HOME’s website:
This week I’ve been trying to settle on the textiles, rug and lighting so I can got those ordered and in the works. I put together this mood board:
LIGHTING
I have this antique chandelier:
and I am trying to modernize it/freshen it up so I have found a few options…
This is fun, from SASSY SHADES on ETSY:
and I am in love with these, from SHANDELL’S:
I am also looking at SCONCES for above the bed which are really needed for night time reading. Here are a few I’m considering. These are all from LAMPS PLUS except for the one that is second from last, which is from TARGET.
I am leaning toward the third pair down as I like the brass and gold combination and it will offer a little contrast.
The look is pretty good for the price of $99/pair. The last one I would take in a heartbeat but it is a little over budget.
TEXTILES
This was one of my inspiration shots (room by Ana Rosa):
I put together these fabrics that I found at THE MILL END STORE in SE PDX. I like the Japanese toile that has a vintage quality to it and I am adding stripes and ikat.
I am going to use these fabrics for my duvet cover and euro shams:
OLYMPUS DIGITAL CAMERA
I have some triple pleated BELGIAN LINEN SHADES from WS HOME for this room. I am going to add a decorative inner edge to liven up the curtains and tie in with the blues in the room.
This is what I will add – a few pleats on each inner side.
It is really nice to step into a soft, plush rug in the morning so I am thinking maybe something like this SAFAVIEH CALIFORNIA SHAG runner from LOWE’s for $83.
PAINT COLORS
I am planning to paint the trim a fresh white.
I was originally planning to paint the dresser indigo blue but I am also playing around with caliente red also.
Only because I can’t get this entry by @maxwhumphrey out of my mind.
And LIGHT GRAY PAINT for the two DOORS
That’s where I am for now. I would love to hear your comments. I have some fun art ideas in the works to share with you next time. Thanks for stopping by.

NEWS FLASH:
CYBER MONDAY sale going on at STUDIO TULLIA on Etsy.
Lots of great gift ideas as well as loads of velvet, fur and other richly hued pillows for the holiday season.
Use coupon code CYBER2016 to get 20% off everything at my ETSY STORE !
I’ll post some product highlights soon.
I just got back from Chico, California for Thanksgiving. Had hoped to launch this sale sooner but the internet reception was pretty spotty where we were. I needed a break from screens anyway before revving up for our final month of 2016! Sure was nice to catch up face to face with so many wonderful family members and friends.
How was your Thanksgiving? Are you feeling as sluggish and stuffed as I am from feasting for three days and long hours spent on the road?
Best,
Suzanne

I finally got the orange walls covered with three coats of MOUNTAIN SNOW white paint from METRO PAINT. Now everything is looking very white.
This is where we were last week:
And this is where we are this week:
I’ve finished most of the trim in a GLOSSY WHITE from MILLER PAINT and hung up this VINTAGE MIRROR.
I’ve installed this 28″ Round Mirror from TARGET. I wanted a bigger one, but for $49 I went with this one.
We had to stop and sand the glue and carpet remnants off the stairs and side molding before we painted anymore of the stairs.
The WEST ELM ASHIK WOOL RUNNER arrived and while I wasn’t so sure about it initially, I think I can make it work.
It looked like this on the website:
And this is what it looks like in person. This is a close up of the rug. The palette is lighter and the fibers are more coarse than the original photo, with a lot of the salmony orange pink.
I started to panic and look for another rug, with this inspo photo of a space by ASHE + LEANDRO in mind:
This is what I came up with two different woven Indian rugs from a local store, CARGO
and
but in the end, I opted for the WEST ELM rug after all. The colors seemed too busy for the hallway and the size was not really right.
MY FOCUS this last week is all about CONTRAST in this WHITE HALLWAY and a NEW LIGHT FIXTURE to replace this existing one, which is nice, but too small:
So, here’s my final check list:
- Paint semi gloss CHARCOAL black paint on stair rail and tops of stairs
- Paint all four doors semi gloss SILVER GRAY
- Paint office door to my office semi gloss CHARCOAL
- Paint stoop at base of stairs white and apply the STENCIL from HEIRLOOM142 from Canada below for fun:
5. Hang all my NEWLY MATTED AND FRAMED PHOTOS in the stairwell.
(For you Portland locals) Seth at I’VE BEEN FRAMED, was a dream to work with; along with some pre-cut double mattes that I found, he matted and assembled “frame kits” for me that made it super easy and affordable. I went in there with ten or so frames and was worried how much that was going to cost. It cost me about $50!
6. Install the custom cushions and lumbar for the new antique bench I scored at GOODWILL for $40:
I thought about painting this bench but I have decided to leave the natural wood and cane work. I am making a seat cushion and lumbar pillow to give it a more modern look and hide the missing cane work until I can get it fixed. Overall its pretty sturdy though.
6. And lastly, there is the matter off the antique DRESSER, which I am planning to also paint MILK PAINT CHARCOAL.
I’ve got my work cut out for me, which might have something to do with why I am getting so little sleep lately…I’m worried.
See you next week for the FINAL REVEAL.
Don’t forget to check in with the FEATURED DESIGNERS:
As well as the GUEST PARTICIPANTS::
See you soon! Thanks for following along.
Best,
Suzanne

Well, here I am again, taking the challenge. Along with hundreds of other designers, I am committing to 6 weeks of design starting today! This bi-annual event, sponsored by Linda from CALLING IT HOME, is super fun to follow along.
Here is the link for the ORC DESIGNERS …
And here is the link for the ORC GUEST PARTICIPANTS, who are free to join in with their own projects.
A little history…Our house is an Arts & Crafts 1906 Bungalow style house. Grandma used to live upstairs in our house, which was converted into a duplex a long time ago, but she moved out a little over a year ago.The kids (two 9 year old twins) have moved upstairs so they could each have their own rooms. We are slowly transforming the space into a lighter, more kid-friendly zone.
Last Spring I did my DAUGHTER’S ROOM as part of the ORC SPRING 2016:
BEFORE:
AFTER:
This time, I am going to spruce up the UPSTAIRS HALLWAY & STAIRS.
Here is the BEFORE:
The walls and carpet have got to g0! I am also rethinking the furniture and its functionality. And the lighting.
Here is the chair I have there now which is not that comfortable and the wrong color.
My daughter needs a dresser just outside of her room, where the large trunk is so I am planning to paint an old heirloom piece that we have. I like the idea of a punch of color. Here’s an example:
The banister and post are looking warped. The woodwork on the upper level is kind of wobbly and in a perfect world, needs to be replaced.
We recently stripped the carpet on the stairs to see what we were dealing with underneath.
This is what we found under the carpet at the bottom of the stairs. Pretty bad. So, that needs to be replaced and painted also.
BLACK & WHITE with COLOR ACCENTS is pretty much the direction I am headed.
Here are a few inspiration pictures I have found by the firm, ASHE_LEANDRO. Boy do they have the BLACK & WHITE motif down:
I need to put some artwork up on the wall going upstairs and in the hallway. This salon style hung artwork could work.
There is a possibility I might tint the white walls slightly. I like the way this yellow piece looks as an accent color (for the heirloom dresser).
I should probably mention The BATHROOM, as it is off from the HALLWAY and is the next item on the list when this is done. We were going to do it for the ORC, but weren’t sure we could get it done in time.
I would like to continue the BLACK & WHITE motif into this room as well.
Here is a BEFORE:
I really like these bathrooms:
And some kind of black/white tile, but I don’t know that I will get too far with the BATHROOM just yet.

I wanted to share a few snapshots from an article recently published in Apartment Therapy featuring Kristen and her husband Ken Naffziger’s lovely home in North Portland. Check it out.
A former PR executive who went back to school and is now working as an interior designer.
She took this picture of her living room days after the photographer was there from Apartment Therapy and I think it is one of the best. She scored that amazing coffee table at the Portland Flea market.
Kristen had asked me if I had anything that would work with the artwork by French Artist Paule Marrot, that she had found at Jonathon Adler. The Walking Rock fabric from Pendleton Woolen Mills came to mind right away. What do you think? I think it holds its own pretty well. We also paired it with some solid black cotton and creamy fur pillows.
Here are a few other great pictures:
Love the brass wallhanging from Pottery Barn and Ikea hanging pendant
Leopard Pillows from STUDIO TULLIA with lovely Asian prints in guestroom.
Pillows from STUDIO TULLIA look great with the animal throw from Restoration Hardware. This picture was before Kristen found that amazing coffee table in the picture above.
Kristin in the kitchen with her pup.
Chiang Mai Dragon pillows and Blue and White Shibori pillow, also from STUDIO TULLIA. Love the sectional and coffee table.
Lovely artwork by Lane Van Doren, an artist from San Miguel de Allende, Mexico.
This happens to be one of my favorite spots in their house especially with that large Design Legacy print featuring botanical artist E. A Seguy! I just picked up an incredible book recently called BOTANICALS Butterflies and Insects published by Assouline. The book was assembled by Leslie Overstreet, Curator of Natural-History Rare Books at the Smithsonian. What a beautiful book. I highly recommend it:
Available from Amazon
So, if you have a minute, check out the full article and enjoy more great pictures of their house and the rich collection of art, furnishings and mid century vintage finds.
