WK 8 – ONE ROOM CHALLENGE – 70’s INSPIRED TEEN BEDROOM

WK 8 – ONE ROOM CHALLENGE – 70’s INSPIRED TEEN BEDROOM

We are at WEEK 8 and whooped.

Finally got the walls dry-walled, sanded, and primed.

All the trim has been sanded and cleaned.

We are painting the walls and trim this week.

We did pick up this amazing chair for my daughter from KRAVET.

Vega Chair

I will post again when we are done painting. Hoping to wrap things up in the next week or two.

This was an ambitious project to do as a family. We have all worked hard and are proud of how far we have come.

We did not finish in 8 wks, but  I know this would have dragged on for months if we hadn’t joined this challenge.

Thanks as always for following along. I hope everyone has a wonderful THANKSGIVING.

XOXO,

ONE ROOM CHALLENGE – Teen’s 70s Inspired Room

ONE ROOM CHALLENGE – Teen’s 70s Inspired Room

Hello My Lovelies,

Well, we are deep into Week 4 of the

ONE ROOM CHALLENGE.

Things are getting pretty real. There is no more flim-flamming around. We have been hammering and hacking away at old hardwood cabinetry and layered linoleum with ever-mounting piles of debris and sharp nails.  I can say after two days’ of solid work we are all pretty wiped out.

We have made some major strides, but I am beginning to wonder if we will ever be done with the walls.

And, we changed our paint color for the last time. 0

BENJAMIN MOORE – SILVERY BLUE

You have to tape a decent size paint sample (which BM provides) on the wall – in different places, at different times of the day before you settle on the right color. You really need that bedroom color to be a color you love, you know?

FLOORING:

This is what we found under 3 layers of laminate flooring. Very cool, asbestos-ridden 1940’s vintage flooring that we cannot salvage 🙁

We needed to be masked while pulling up all the debris.

One of my favorite places to shop is a non-profit, salvaged building materials resource, called

THE REBUILDING CENTER

Over the years we have found some great finds. This latest find was brand new wood veneer flooring in a beautiful hickory color. I wanted to buy the whole lot and re-floor the entire upstairs, but my husband reeled me in; one project at a time.

I border on manic when I am at this place.  So many great materials. I want to get new lighting for the living room, pavers for the backyard, recycled METRO paint to freshen up our stairs.

FOCUS, Suz, FOCUS

Today’s task was debris removal. We’ve got a big old pile that will go to the dump soon enough.

WE FOUND A DOOR!

We found this beautiful door with the same 5 panels we have on all the doors upstairs.  What teenager doesn’t need a door!  I counted this has a huge score.

IKEA FINDS

We found this awesome chair called the TOBIAS CHAIR in the clearance section, half off.  And that peg board behind it was another find from THE REBUILDING CENTER.

We are interested in this Duvet Cover

AKKERFIBBLA

And we are narrowing in on this GADBJERG rug:

Until next week, my friends!

TEEN BEDROOM – WEEK 4 – ONE ROOM CHALLENGE

TEEN BEDROOM – WEEK 4 – ONE ROOM CHALLENGE

WEEK 4

The ONE ROOM CHALLENGE event was extended to 8 weeks rather than the usual six weeks due to the COVID 19 reality. In actuality,  with my kids at home, assisting with online learning, so many extra meals, and loads more cleaning, there just never seems to be as much time in each day. I’m sure quite a few of you can relate.

LIGHTING

We did make some headway on lighting. We had two IKEA sconces leftover from the twins’ rooms so we decided to recover the shades with black and white plaid fabric. Given that the room is so tiny, sconces are the way to go!

SALVAGED SCONCES AND DIY LAMPSHADES!

Charlotte came up with a great idea I thought which was to coat the edges of the existing lampshade with chalk. She then rolled the lampshade onto the fabric which left a pattern of lines for us to cut along.

We allowed for a seam allowance all around and then trimmed the fabric.

We folded over and pressed one edge with an iron. Then we proceeded to apply hot glue to the inside edges of the lamp shades as we folded the fabric over the rims.  We then pressed the fabric firmly onto the shade using wooden skewer sticks. Once dry, we trimmed off excess fabric. .

Given that the shades were angled, it was a challenge to keep the fabric taut. You really need to take your time and use binder clips to keep the fabric in place as you manuever around the shade, allowing the glue to dry. The fabric does shift quite a bit on a slanted shade.  Four hands were better than two, so we worked together on this.

It might be best to use Elmer’s glue or even spray mount to adhere the fabric to the shade.  The fabric was a heavy cotton so we opted for hot glue, which dries quickly.

We are actually quite happy with the results. Now she will have lighting over her loft bed and below for her desk.

There’s some satisfaction in reusing what we have. And given that her room is so small, sconces allow for more surface space.

BACK LIT MIRROR

I found a large oval mirror that someone had put out on the street near my house. It is quite large at 24″x 26″ and is already set up for a back lit feature. I have mentioned the law of attraction with regard to my home improvement projects. It’s uncanny how objects I need just start to show up in random places.

We are going to put the lighting up behind the mirror so it glows from behind.

This is the basic layout for the gallery wall:

FAIRY LIGHTING

My husband ordered fairy lighting from EBAY in three different colors. You may also find it on AMAZON.

TEEN BEDROOM – WEEK 3 – ONE ROOM CHALLENGE

TEEN BEDROOM – WEEK 3 – ONE ROOM CHALLENGE

WEEK 3 has been about ordering HARDWARE for the loft bed, ART SELECTION for the GALLERY WALL and LIGHTING.

So many fun prints and posters on ETSY and AMAZON. Loads to choose from so we did a quick mock-up to get a sense of where we are headed.

And I found an enormous oval mirror a lot like this one from RESTORATION HARDWARE. 3’X4′ approx. There really was only one place that this would even work in the room, so sometimes you just have to make things work. Large scale in a small room can often work wonders.

GALLERY WALL MOCK-UP

We are still planning to paint the bed gray.

LIGHTING
We are playing around with how to use FAIRY LIGHTS, that can change color and be dimmable overhead.
So this coming week, we are prepping the room for paint, sanding and continuing work on the bed, and playing around with how much art we need, where we will hang it, and what fits within our budget.

So, here is the link below to the ORC FEATURED DESIGNERS as well as the GUEST PARTICIPANTS.

Thank you for reading along. Until next week….

TEEN GIRL’S ROOM – SECOND WK OF THE ONE ROOM CHALLENGE

TEEN GIRL’S ROOM – SECOND WK OF THE ONE ROOM CHALLENGE

Well, here we are at WEEK 2 of the ORC project. In case you missed the first post, we are remodeling my 13 year old teenage daughter’s tiny bedroom.  We think the best use of the space should include a loft bed.  My husband, with her help, is in the throes of making this custom bed.

Here are some nice ones that help us to conceptualize how to best use the space.

LOFT BEDS:

This loft bed with built-in shelves under the ladder allows room for a desk and more storage space. I love the bookshelf under the bedrail.

POTTERY BARN always has quality furnishings, and its styled beautifully with their linens. The brass touches are nice.
This is also from POTTERY BARN which I included because we are considering painting the bed gray.

A truly mid century loft look by WEST ELM/POTTERY BARN. The yellow is beautiful with the warm wood tones. Love the dresser in there, too. I love how the desk fits right behind the ladder, which is simple and elegant.

This is the Harlan loft bed with desk ($500 range). This more basic loft bed is built with comfortable sleeping space and plenty of room underneath. It is available at several online stores including Wayfair and Overstock.

FURNISHINGS

These two pieces above are both from IKEA. There are lots of nice options for storage bins, drawers, etc. They are a bargain around $100 each. And they would just fit, within an inch, below the loft bed we are making.

We already have a desk chair kind of like this that someone had just left on the street corner across from an office buiding. It looked brand new, so I grabbed it! Like I said, LAW OF ATTRACTION at work…

We are also considering a comfy chair if it will fit. This first one (above) is from URBAN OUTFITTERS and the second one (below) is from POTTERY BARN TEEN.

On sale for $199 at POTTERY BARN TEEN right now.

LIGHTING
I am loving this vintage mid century modern light fixture that extends out, with little stars. $250 at HIPPO HARDWARE in Portland, OR, a great resource for vintage lighting and hardware. The place has soul.
This one from TARGET is also nice, and we love the color. About $100.
PAINT COLOR PALETTE
We are headed in this direction with grays, blues and white direction with pops of color in the art. We also want to mix in some color with the art.
ROOM THEME: THE AVENGERS

We have been watching all of the AVENGER SUPER HERO MOVIES in order since the quarantine started. Usually one or two a week. It’s actually really fun to watch as a family. Thank goodness these Disney movies now have plenty of heroines as well as heroes. AVENGER HEROINES will be the prevailing theme in the art that she is considering for her room. I can think of worse role models, right?

1. Captain America: The First Avenger (1942-1943)
2. Captain Marvel (1995)
3. Iron Man (2010)
4. Iron Man 2 (2011)
5. The Incredible Hulk (2011)
6. Thor (2011)
7. The Avengers (2012)
8. Iron Man 3 (2012)
9. Thor: The Dark World (2013)
10. Captain America: The Winter Soldier (2014)
11. Guardians of the Galaxy (2014)
12. Guardians of the Galaxy 2 (2014)
13. Avengers: Age of Ultron (2015)
14. Ant-Man (2015)
15. Captain America: Civil War (2016)
16. Spider-Man: Homecoming (2016)
17. Doctor Strange (2016-2017)
18. Black Widow (2017)
19. Black Panther (2017)
20. Thor: Ragnarok (2017)
21. Ant-Man and the Wasp (2017)
22. Avengers: Infinity War (2017)
23. Avengers: Endgame (2018-2023)
24. Spider-Man: Far From Home (2023)
ART
There are so many great sources on ETSY for everything from downloadable $5 pdfs you can print yourself, to pricier vintage movie posters and comic books.

This we bought.

Rosie the Riveter is not a MARVEL SUPER HERO but Charlotte is relating to this heroic image. She has even been dressing like her in a blue jumpsuit from TARGET and a bandanna around her head.

So this coming week, we are prepping the room for paint, sanding and continuing work on the bed, and playing around with how much art we need, where we will hang it, and what fits within our budget.

So, here is the link below to the ORC FEATURED DESIGNERS as well as the GUEST PARTICIPANTS if you just can’t get enough.

Thank you for reading along. Until next week….

ORC FALL 2019 – ARTHUR’ S ROOM – greener on the other side

ORC FALL 2019 – ARTHUR’ S ROOM – greener on the other side

PAINT

This week has been about painting the room.

We chose a bright white for the trim and doors.

And we chose a bright green for the walls.

Arthur would not be swayed from a bold green and I decided to go with it (the picture above is a Benjamin Moore image).

It is a kid’s room after all.

The color we chose is STOKES FOREST GREEN by Benjamin Moore.

Below is the slanted wall that you see from the bed.   We are going to put the decorative wallpaper mural there on the top half of the wall.  It is called HIGH SEAS in Henderson Blue by REBELWALLS. We ordered it online from Sweden and had it in less than a week. It came with the glue, too.

For the first coat I did a really rough paint job around the trim because it was not dry yet and I was eager to get the color up on the walls. The next day I taped all the trim before applying the second coat.

Arthur was able to help out with the roller portion of the painting.

I decided to continue the color on the ceiling because I was afraid the room would feel chopped up and I want the mural to be the focus.

I’m afraid to go too dark in any room in Portland as we are always starved for light in the winter time, but I think the bright color will be cheerful.    The room glows like an emerald jewel as you walk up the stairs.

Looking forward to sharing the final results with you next week.
