REDFIN recently asked me to contribute to an article about Gallery Walls,

How to Create a Gallery Wall: 10 Tips and Ideas for Your Dream Display by Emily Pascale

There are so many great tips in this one article, from numerous design professionals – be sure to check it out!

My contribution was “Consider the cohesion”.

“Finding harmony in your gallery wall starts with considering how your pieces work together. “When creating a gallery wall, select a cohesive mix of photographs, art work or decorative objects, like a collection of black-and-white photographs, or a series of vintage paintings for example.”

“Lay out your arrangement on the floor to find a balanced composition, then use painters tape to map out the placement on the wall. Vary your frame size and spacing, but keep a consistent theme or color palette; all modern metal frames or all natural wood frames for example for a harmonious look and lastly, throw in one or two unexpected things to add some visual interest and intrigue.”

Input from many designers included everything from a gallery wall reflecting your personal style (which is what you like, collect, want to honor in your home)…to a Feng Shui approach to your curated collection of objects, or how to start with a statement piece and build around that, within your gallery.

Over the years, gallery walls have been a mainstay in my home. A way to create a theme or mood in a room.  If you love to collect art or a certain type of object/collectible, curate those items and create a fun vibe.  In my guest room below, I wanted to capture the blue skies of the coast, which are my happy place, but I wanted to bring in some pops of red, too.   Giving the room a real Summer feel. The pair of photographs from Venice add a jolt of color and together balance the blue sky photographs.   The watermelon print in the center is the anchor.  All of this masquerades the TV screen which is not much to look at otherwise.

GUEST ROOM FINAL REVEAL

Hallway Family Gallery Wall:

I found intriguing photos of each prominent family member and dear friends in our lives and added a couple of wedding pictures as well as a few works of art from my kids when they were younger. I stuck with black and white with a few antique gold frames thrown in and an occasional pop of color.  I have built upon this collection over the years which is double what it used to be.  Stairwells and hallways are the perfect place for Family tributes.

This wall below is a great solution to a large collection of family pictures and memorabilia.

A maximalist approach. It is carefully balanced with a variety of sizes, some pairings and a nice balance of lighter and darker pieces.

It makes for a very enjoyable viewing with the art pieces also scattered throughout.

This one below showcases the artist’s work and is grounded by the large painting in the middle that looks like the artist.

Here are a few other faves I came across on Pinterest:

From Gray Street Market

from Sassy Spaces

from Gleam Nest

You too can create a unique gallery wall and know that it can be an ever evolving exhibit of your favorite pieces.

Play around with placement of pieces, scale, etc. and change things up every once and awhile and most importantly, have fun!

Suzanne
