I am going to take the challenge (as I often encourage my kids to do) and participate in THE ONE ROOM Challenge organized by CALLING IT HOME as a ORC Guest Participant.
My 6 week project will be my daughter Charlotte’s room. Here are a couple inspiration palettes we came up with. Soft pinks and lavenders, with neutrals and maybe a few punches of color like green or yellow so its not so pinky sweet. The cherry tree in our front yard and the whole neighborhood in fact is blooming gloriously. That has been our primary inspiration as far as finding the right pink and lavender for the walls and ceiling.
She is nine so she still plays with dolls…maybe for another year or two…
Just to give you a little background on the room and my daughter…she and her twin brother have moved out of their shared nursery which is now my HOME OFFICE and moved upstairs into their OWN ROOMS. Charlotte’s room is really small. It could be a walk in closet; it’s that small. There is another room that’s a decent size available but she has chosen this one for the coziness factor.
Here is a quick floor plan of the room. The dimensions are 9’5″ X 7′ 3″ .
As you can see there is room for a bed, a dresser, a small accent chair and a side table. That’s it. The ceiling height is 7’10” at the highest point but 6″10″ where the roof line intersects with the window frame.
Here is a before shot of the room. This is what you see when you walk in. Two windows. There is a little more to the room on the left wall where the bed will go and that’s it. There are also issues with the double-paned windows as you can see.
So, here is a list of what we are hoping to accomplish:
- Patch old plaster and paint room.
- Select lighting for the room; a ceiling fixture and small lamp for bedside table.
- Design and fabricate Window Treatments
- Slipcover existing side chair we own
- New bedding – cover, shams, accent pillows
- Select and hang art
- Either re-carpet or find a throw rug.
- Address double pane window fogginess issues.
Think this is do-able? I guess we are going to find out.
So follow along with the twenty designers and design bloggers who will each be sharing room makeovers from start to finish over the next six weeks. And there are many more guest participants, like me,who will link to the CALLING IT HOME website.
See you next week!
Best,
Suzanne

Ive always loved velvet…for its purity of color, and its durability. So soft and seemingly delicate to the touch and yet, most of the time, you can wash it and it comes clean. The other thing that’s great about velvet is that patina, that like no other, develops over time and that only comes from years of wear and tear.
Here are a few lovely interiors starring velvet as the lead role:

This Fall 2015’s design trends include velvet as they often due this time of year. This is nothing new. The royals have been donning velvet frocks for years. Still being reinvented in fantastic ways today. I’ve been awestruck this past several months while watching The Tudors and Reign on Netflix (highly recommend both) with their incredible velvets, furs, brocades…

It was a turquoise velvet that truly launched my Etsy store in 2011. I had a bolt of gorgeous bright turquoise that I’d found at an estate sale and I decided to make a pillow and post it. It sold right away and I could not make them fast enough after that, until the whole bolt was gone (that was a sad day). Turquoise happened to be the Color the Year in 2010 and I sold a boatload. Color of the Year in 2012 was Tangerine Tango, and I sold another boatload of orange velvet. What will 2016 bring I wonder – rose quartz and serenity?
I stock LOTS of velvet in my store. Some are limited stock, well discounted pieces, I come across on my hunts, and others I order from Kravet, Schumacher, Pindler, Manuel Canovas, and so on:
Sometimes I add Greek key Ribbon:
I have a slew of velvet pillows on my etsy STORE always….

Well, I am off to MEXICO with my lovely family in a couple days. Time to unplug. It’s going to be Christmas in Mexico with the grandparents and their custom built house in Puerto Vallarta. I’ll be sure to share some pictures.
Happy Holidays to you and thanks as always, for reading.

I’ve been meaning to share some work from this charismatic and talented woman since June. With the kids out of school for Summer life and work is a spiraling tug of war.
Always looking for inspiring talent, surprisingly, it sometimes finds me (or STUDIO TULLIA, that is). Tiffany purchased some pillows from me and I was thrilled to see them show up in one of her project reveals. I love to see “after” photos – one of the most rewarding things about my work.
So here are some pictures of a lovely living and dining room a la Tiffany Brooks. What really blows me away is that she is the artist who also did the art work, which seems to pull everything together.
Look at the lovely layering of textures and patterns.
Another close up of the dining room.
Overview of the living room. Love the salon style art work above the sofa.
Interesting vignette of the dining room. She managed to make these vintage chairs work with the finish treatment and bold color choices. So much personality in this room.
And her is the close up of her art work. How wonderful is that!
And the lovely…Tiffany Brooks
Here are the pillows Tiffany Brooks selected from STUDIO TULLIA:
Hope you enjoyed this splash of talent as much as I did.
Enjoy your week, and thanks for reading!

If you are a visual person, a person who likes to travel, you want to go on an adventure and laugh until you cry, you have to see THE GRAND BUDAPEST HOTEL by Wes Anderson. He is such a maverick, so creative with his sets, costumes, storytelling and casting. I want to treat you to a few stills because I think they are so beautiful.
Yes, if I were an eccentric, wealthy, old widow, I would love to vacation here. In fact, if I lived in Hungary or anywhere nearby, and the hotel actually existed, I would put it on my travel itinerary immediately, regardless of its physical state. I love grand structures with history and romance – don’t you?
An 8 foot model of the hotel was created so that they could pretend to show it in its original grandeur. How dramatic does it get, up on the mountain top like that.
And then, there’s the cast, most of which you see again and again in his films:
A few of my favorite scenes/actors from the movie:
And other greats:
Lobby Boy played by Tony Revolori
stills from the movie
So much gorgeous pink!
A few more stills for you and I better stop or I’ll give it all away:
And here he is, Wes Anderson!
Would you look at those gorgeous boho pillows on the chair behind him?
Anderson has a second home in Paris, besides his NY apartment. His films have such a European bent to them. Before writing Darjeeling Limited he traveled around on a train in Europe with a few of his friends.
Here he is at Deyrolle in Paris, the famous taxidermy shop:
So, let’s look at the color palettes of his different films, which all seem to have that over-saturated color, late afternoon rich sunlight quality:
And here are a few more movies by Anderson to see, if you haven’t already –
MOONRISE KINGDOM is charming –
THE AQUATIC LIFE is the first movie of his I saw. I laughed hysterically until I cried during that one also:
DARJEELING LIMITED I just went out and rented, which took me to Paris and India for a couple hours. And THE ROYAL TENENBAUMS, RUSHMORE and FANTASTIC MR. FOX are on the must see list.
Anderson is such a talent, a maverick, my cultural hero. So needed right now as I wait for Oregon grays and rain to give way to SUMMER.

From Portland, you can be in Hood River in one hour. Just follow the Columbia River Gorge all the way there, past so many iconic stops: Multnomah Falls, Columbia Gorge Hotel, Bonneville Dam…
Hood River, a hot spot for wind surfers, is a charming little town full of historic, quaint neighborhoods with stunning views of Mt. Hood and Mt. Adams. And then there’s the dramatic gorge winding through the town; its vast and large scale with richly textured cliffs. As you arrive, you can feel the upbeat, laid back vibe where the pace is slower and the view, like a cool glass of water. The air is fresh with Spring scents.
I went to see one of my favorite artists, Elizabeth See, an oil painter who paints all things found in nature – particularly animals and flowers. She uses oil paint on wood. She resides in White Salmon but brought her paintings to her great grandfather’s wood cabin, that was once his art studio. She even shared with us some of his landscape paintings that were still kickin’ around from the 40’s.
This was the view on the way there, just outside of town, past vineyards, and nurseries:
This is the view of Mt. Adams in one direction and Mt. Hood in the opposite, as you approach:
Here is the cabin where she had her work:
This last shot is most of what went home with us. We couldn’t resist the local bird paintings and studies of a rabbit, a bear, a guinea pig, a game hen, a Magpie, A Great Horned Owl, and flowers. Her flower paintings are a favorite, but she was mostly out since she paints them in the Summer. She mostly had animals this time.
Keep thinking about these two:
We had lunch at a landmark road side cafe, Twin Peaks, where gliders and small planes fly right over our heads before landing at the air strip on the other side of the road. Great fish and chips.
I stopped to take a few shots of this lovely old home along the road with enormous fruit trees, big old barns and of course a great view of Mt. Hood.
After that we headed over the Toll Bridge to White Salmon, Washington, which was 7 miles away.
We made the long trek to Wildcraft Studios, which I have been completely curious about, but sadly they had closed up early. They offer all kinds of art classes and workshops.
Chelsea Heffner, Wildcraft Studio School
Spotted an artful tree on the way there, filled with sneakers, cowboy boots, work boots….curious for sure.
Lastly, we stopped by The Hatchery Art Studios in downtown White Salmon. Here are a few shots of some artists’ work from there:
– Angela Williamson
– Cyndi Strid
Printmaking by Sally Gilchrist
Wish I had time to get to the Dalles Art Center and many other studios – there’s some real talent out there.
I’ll have to make a weekend of it next year.
We may head back for Trout Lake Festival of the Arts July 12-13 on the green at Trout Lake School.
So, that’s a wrap for this hunt.

I’ve been doing some research on INDIGO as I am always fascinated with current design trends, and why certain colors and textiles start to saturate the marketplace. The use of INDIGO textiles has been on the rise for several years in fashion, interior design and art. A recent article on Livemint.com summed it up pretty well: “Indigo is now the poster pigment of ecological responsibility and the crafts revolution; the flagship shade of the natural dyes movement that runs parallel to eco-friendly fashion and organic style. Interest in natural indigo has been scattered in the past decade but the revival is now visible everywhere”.
– check out the article by clicking on image below.
Indigo dyes are natural, organic dyes. Using indigo is making a statement: to step away from chemically processed dyes and goods that are harmful to the environment. The look of indigo is more crafted and not mass manufactured. It fits right into the folksy, crafts revolution taking place around the world. Dark blue and navy blue have forever been classic and constant, like blue jeans. Indigo today is global and modern.
Here are some pictures of some lovely products or applications of Indigo found in art, textiles, interiors, and fashion… for you to enjoy.

I just put my winter socks on as I am writing this and thinking the heat may have to go on tonight. I am not quite ready to bid adieu to Summer until I have reminisced just a little bit more about SUMMER. There is no better time to be in Portland. The weather is pure bliss. We enjoyed some lovely, quintessentially Summer days hanging out by the Willamette River, visiting Oaks Park, Manzanita, Mt. Hood, lemonade stands, barbecues with friends, flower festivals, swim lessons and so on.
I do want to share my brother in law, Lucca, and his fabulous bride, Rhonda’s Campground Wedding with you. The event took place at Barview Jetty County Campground in Tillamook County. We could not have had a more glorious day and warmer gathering of friends and family. The bride and groom really set the tone, which was casual, relaxed and fun with lots of good food and wine.
My husband and I offered to do “the cake” which evolved into a cupcake tower. Our dear friend, JoAnn Andriese, a super talented designer living in the Bay Area, was planning to do the flowers. She was unfortunately called away and unable to make it at the last minute. She already had a succulent concept going for the beach wedding so we took her ideas and reluctantly ran. I consulted her via text about purchases and concepts along the way and somehow, along with the help and inspiration of the groom’s parents, pulled it together for our dear newlyweds.
So here are some pictures of the campground wedding. Enjoy!

Aunt Judy made a refreshing lemonade ginger punch with a frozen whirling iceberg of sliced lemons, limes and orange raspberries. We used a vintage glass punch bowl and platter.
Italian chocolates and Jordan almonds were served in a vintage silver platter. In fact we brought all of the silver serving ware from our wedding for others to use as serving dishes. My husband and I collected a lot of silverware in preparation for our wedding almost ten years ago. Weddings are always the perfect excuse to get out your silver and punch bowls!
And here are some pictures of the newlyweds at a scenic overlook with a stunning view of the beach:
Bouquet was made of protea, bridal blush, sedum, beach grasses, and a few pink roses.
Rhonda’s dog, Pearl, with ribbon and rose. She was one of the ring bearers in the wedding.
Channeling JoAnn, we were able to somehow get the planters, bouquet and corsages done. Here is what we came up with.
It is not so hard to do this really, although I was intimidated at first. Find a silver punch bowl, urn, or other container…then place a liner, followed by dirt, then the plants, fill air pockets with more dirt, cover with Spanish moss and add shells if you want and Voila!
Hard to know where to start with all the plants and and planters. We also used roses for the individual table arrangements.
The succulents, orchids and roses we used were from Trader Joe’s and the Proteas and Bridal Blush was from Sammy’s Flowers (www.sammysflowers.com), the sedum was from my in-laws garden and (don’t tell) some pearly everlasting wild flowers and grasses were found growing by the beach. The planters were all reused existing household items like a vintage colander, a copper urn, a silver punch bowl, a Paul revere bowl, and a few other random planters. We used the mixture of silver with copper, which was a really nice blend of metals. We also added some found shells to the planters. Not too rustic and not too formal.
My dear husband made the cupcake tower out of plexiglass disks he found at a garage sale and attached them with a long threaded metal rod through the center, each tier attached by air duct adaptors! We made the cover out of natural canvas and burlap.
Here are some before shots.
Some foraging along a path to the beach resulted in a lovely assortment of grasses and wildflowers. We used a lot of lichen, moss and interesting branches we found also. All in all it was a fun, adventurous wedding for a great couple.
Oh, I almost forgot. I made the bride and groom a custom pillow from STUDIO TULLIA. Their initials were monogrammed in slate blue over a blueberry blue ticking and accented with the same cream grosgrain ribbon found in the bridal bouquet. The colors were inspired by their wedding cake choice of blueberry cake with butter cream frosting. A momento for a beautiful day. Congratulations Lucca and Rhonda!

Tina Marie, designer and blogger for THE ENCHANTED HOME, discovered STUDIO TULLIA in the process of searching for decorative pillows for her veranda/loggia at her fabulous manse in New York.
I was lucky enough to be one of two final contenders in her pillow search on ETSY where my pillows will now live: in the Home of Enchantment.
This is her lovely blue and white design board of ETSY pillows she found:

You have to read this post which not only has many, many pictures of my Chiang Mai Pillows in situ at her FABULOUS home but will also introduce you to the extremely entertaining world of Tina Marie. She shares on a daily basis a very social and active life, steeling iphone pics in her daily forays to shop and visit friends. If anyone can handle the years long construction and interior decoration of this French Chateau Style Home set against the lovely rolling hills of New York, Tina can.
She also has an online shop featuring lovely European lighting, tableware and accessories. I am particularly enamored of the etched bell jar lanterns and seriously contemplating a couple of these for our home:

I’ll admit — I’ve been holding on to that fabulous picture of Olivia Palermo since it was first published back in February! No palette is as definitively “spring” to me as pink and green. It’s the look of tennis courts, Masters jackets, freshly cut lawns, and graduation bouquets. (Did I mention preppy?) For interiors right now I’m loving an almost moss shade of green — especially in velvet against walnut and brass for a rich look. (Have you seen Tory Burch’s drawing room?) And fashion-wise, shades of apple and emerald green are great for fair-skinned girls like me. (Just one more reason to break out the SPF 50.) As the temperature inches higher, I hope you find a patio or garden to enjoy during these last few weeks of spring!

I made a B line across the street when I saw Yayoi Kusama’s polka dot window display at Louis Vuitton. You have to credit Marc Jacobs, LV’s creative director, who has worked with Kusama over the years to channel the incredible creativity of Kusama into a line of clothes and accessories… released earlier this Summer. An epoch splurge for me would be anything Kusama by Louis Vuitton! Any one of polka dotted accessories – green, red, white, yellow – would do.
Here are a few images of the window display posted by Jeff Kahn on Portlandart.net in August.
Check out this collection:
http://www.louisvuitton.co.uk/front/#/eng_GB/Collections/Women/Yayoi-Kusama/stories/The-Louis-Vuitton-and-Yayoi-Kusama-Collection
A retrospective of Kusama’s work has just finished up at the Whitney in New York, having originated at the Tate Gallery in London. The Whitney sums up Kusama as an artist:
Well known for her use of dense patterns of polka dots and nets, as well as her intense, large-scale environments, Yayoi Kusama works in a variety of media, including painting, drawing, sculpture, film, performance, and immersive installation. Born in Japan in 1929, Kusama came to the United States in 1957 and quickly found herself at the epicenter of the New York avant-garde. After achieving fame through groundbreaking exhibitions and art “happenings,” she returned to her native country in 1973 and is now one of Japan’s most prominent contemporary artists. This retrospective features works spanning Kusama’s career.

This is a fantastic video, excerpts from Kusama: Princess of Polka Dots directed by Heather Lenz, artist Yayoi Kusama, gallerist Richard Castellone, and Tate curator Frances Morris. They discuss Kusama’s childhood in Japan, her move to New York, and the themes of infinity and accumulation in her work. Here is the link:

In my own small way, I have created some polka dot pillows available through Studio Tullia as homage to this extraordinarily inspiring woman. If you would like some Kusama polka dot energy in your home (the symbol of eternity and no soft edges), please visit my Etsy store. (Please click on either of the below pillows to go to my store).
How is this picture to get you into the spirit of Fall:
Ok, if I can’t get a bag, I’ll settle for the watch:
T this limited edition timepiece by Yayoi Kusama and Marc Jacobs is a tribute to the “iconic artwork of the Japanese artist and the expertise of Louis Vuitton. Red with white polka dots, and finished with a diamond-encrusted monogram bracelet, again in red and white. Limited to 188 pieces, the Louis Vuitton Tambour watch by Yayoi Kusama and Marc Jacobs can now be picked up from Louis Vuitton boutiques.

I ran across some of the Denise Fiedler’s newspaper cutouts featured in Vogue and had held onto the images for inspiration. They were all fashion images: fabulous shoes, bags, etc.
Her work has inspired a few evenings of frenzied cutouts of my own. I bought a vintage dictionary, found a pair of scissors, ripped out some pages and before I knew it, I was creating cutouts.
Denise Fiedler is the woman behind paste. A new and creative take on the art of collage. A lover of books, Denise has taken vintage printed pages and incorporated them into representational images. She designs that which she connects with and moves her, which can be anything from traditional and iconic architecture to fashion to dogs to food to portraiture of people that have caught her eye and imagination. Each piece from paste is an original piece of art handmade by Denise. Check out more of her wonderful art at www.pastesf.com
Here are a few of my own:
Thanks Denise, for your inspiration and beautiful art.
